Swapping growth for change
August 29, 2018Liz Beaulieu, Editor
This probably says it all: In this year's State of the Industry Report, for our data on Medicare utilization for 2017, we decided to change the name of the column “2017 Growth” to “2017 Change.” Why? Because for several years now, the allowed charges for the majority of codes have been decreasing year over year, not increasing.
Take CPAP devices. There is an increasing, not decreasing, number of people who are being diagnosed and treated for obstructive sleep apnea,...

The data's starting to trickle in for this year's State of the Industry Report (keep an eye out for it online in December!) and at least one of piece of data isn't looking so bad.
Here is the breakdown of the number of HME companies by how much they billed Medicare for DMEPOS in 2017:
$10M: 54
In 2016, the data looked like this:
$10M: ...
A big ouch for Lincare

The data is starting to trickle in for this year's State of the Industry Report, which we'll publish online in December. One of those pieces of data: the top 100 suppliers by amount allowed by Medicare.
It's always the usual cast of characters in this list, mostly national players, but it's still interesting to see the jockeying for position, as well as the changes in amount allowed, from year to year.
Right off the bat, in this year's list, I noticed that while Lincare still had the No. 1 spot,...
Sneak peek of the State of the Industry Report
October 26, 2016Liz Beaulieu, Editor
There are signs in our upcoming State of the Industry Report (keep an eye out for it in December) that the HME industry may be beginning to settle down after a few roller coaster years. 2011 through 2014 were mostly unkind to the industry, thanks to a Medicare competitive bidding program that has delivered round after round of cuts.
But in 2015, when we look at DME growth by product category, we see slight increases across categories, with the exception of hospital beds. For the wheelchair category,...
Steady as she goes

We're getting our ducks in a row for two big data reveals:
. the annual update of the HME Databank on Oct. 1; and
. the annual update to our State of the Industry Report in December.
For the State of the Industry Report, we always look at the growth in Medicare expenditures for DME. We do this by looking at products grouped into six “buckets”:
. med/surg supplies
. hospital beds
. oxygen and supplies
. wheelchairs
. other DME
. respiratory meds
We run...

In honor of 1.) the 2011 data finally being added to our HME Databank (thank you for your patience!) and 2.) the 2012 State of the Industry Report appearing in our December issue, I have a little pop quiz for you.
HME Databank
1.) Who were the top five providers of CPAP devices (E0601) in 2011?2.) Who was the No. 1 provider of blood glucose strips in New York?3.) How much did Medicare spend on oxygen concentrators (E1390) in 2011?4.) ...
The number of providers who bill Medicare $10 million or more is up. So what?
August 22, 2012Liz Beaulieu, Editor
The data is starting to trickle in for our annual State of the Industry report.
One of the pieces of data we feature in the report each year is the number of DMEPOS suppliers that bill Medicare in four different categories: less than $300,000; $300,000 to $1 million; $1 million to $3 million; $3 million to $10 million; and more than $10 million.
With competitive bidding driving consolidation and other changes to the HME industry, this is always interesting data to analyze, especially compared to...
Another piece of the puzzle: Top DMEPOS suppliers for 2010

I got another piece of the puzzle this week for the State of the Industry report that we'll publish in our December issue: The top 100 DMPOS supplies for 2010.
In July, I posted a blog about the number of DMEPOS suppliers that bill Medicare in these five categories: less than $300,000 per year; $300,000 to $1 million; $1 million to $3 million; $3 million to $10 million; and more than $10 million.
What I learned from that piece of the puzzle: Medium-sized providers, those that bill between $1 million...
