MSC goes where ‘friction’ is

MSC goes where ‘friction’ is ‘(With us), they have a partner that understands the equipment, the billing and the regulatory risk'

Josh MarxCLEVELAND – Medical Service Company’s latest acquisition of a hospital-owned DME brings the number of discharging hospitals under its care to more than 50, says CEO Josh Marx.

MSC announced Dec. 3 it had acquired Carle Medical Supply, a DME provider supporting patients of Carle Health, which includes eight hospitals and multi-specialty physician group practices with more than 1,300 doctors and advanced practice providers, as well as provider-driven health insurance plans.

“Even with the evolution in health care, one constant that does remain is that one to four hospital systems in any given market help most of their communities navigate care,” said Marx. “So, if we partner with one of those systems, that gives us the best chance of taking care of the most patients and delivering the greatest care.”

MSC has made hospital-owned DMEs part of its acquisition strategy for nearly 10 years.

Marx has found that hospitals, like DMEs and other companies, are more often looking at what they need to do to maintain their core business and looking for partners like MSC to supplement that core.

“Hospital systems have found they are extraordinary at delivering care in the hospital setting, but the transition from hospital to home is where a lot of friction and confusion can be introduced,” he said. “(With us), they have a partner that understands the equipment, the billing and the regulatory risk, as well as the integration of working with all of the other post-acute care providers.”

MSC’s investments in its processes, including technology, hospital liaisons and care models, help speed the discharge process for patients, while also increasing patient satisfaction, says Marx.

“Our No. 1 priority is delivering a flawless experience,” he said.
