Money on the table

We just shipped our August (!) issue off to the printer today. The issue features two separate stories on patient education for diabetes patients. One story is about a distributor, H.D. Smith that has developed a program that providers can customize to use with their own patients. This allows the provider to market themselves to referral services as offering more than just strips and meters.
The other is about a mail-order provider who is in the process of launching such a program. That provider,...

A new group, the Committee to Save Independent HME Suppliers (CSI:HME), released the results of a survey yesterday that ranks the top concerns of providers. Restoring payments to complex rehab came in 3rd, ahead of reforming the home oxygen therapy benefit (4th). I'd be lying if I didn't say that surprised me. (For the record: Eliminating national competitive bidding came in 1st and repealing the 36-month oxygen cap came in 2nd.)

A new survey from Philips Electronics reveals that managers are sleeping 19% less than the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night.
According to the survey:
* Americans are more likely than other nationalities to lose sleep through stress at work with 30% citing it as the reason they wake up during the night.
* The average amount of time it takes Americans to fall asleep is nearly 26 minutes—longer than any other country surveyed—and American men lead the world in snoring with 29% snoring...

.!.
While I don't subscribe to the hysteria—and I don't think HME providers do either—surrounding the swine flu outbreak, it is a good opportunity for providers to position themselves as a resource in their community.
It's also a good chance to get out in front of lawmakers. AAHomecare thinks HME providers should be given first responder status in the event of widespread emergencies and this week's scare underscores that.

Are you at risk?
March 24, 2009Mike Moran
Overweight? Underactive? African American or Latino? You're at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The fourth Tuesday of every March is Diabetes Alert Day, created by the American Diabetes Association to call attention to the seriousness of Type 2 diabetes. Nearly 24 million American adults and children currently has Type 2 diabetes, and another one in five is at risk of developing the disease. Take the test to see how you stack up.
