December 1, 2023Liz Beaulieu, Editor

YARMOUTH, Maine – The end of Medicare’s competitive bidding program for knee and back braces on Dec. 31 could open the door to increased audit activity for orthotics in 2024, industry consultants predict.  “We’ve already seen the Supplemental Medical Review Contractor (SMRC) add braces back onto their project list and the Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) still has them on their approved list,” said Kelly Grahovac, general manager of the van Halem Group. “But...

Contractors ‘flip switch’ on audits

January 6, 2023Theresa Flaherty, Managing Editor

YARMOUTH, Maine – After lying largely dormant during the public health emergency, audits are on the rise, including for respiratory claims, say industry consultants.  While audits never stopped completely during the PHE, waivers of certain coverage criteria, including for oxygen equipment and CGMs, helped lessen the burden on providers. But UPIC auditors are now increasingly targeting claims covered by those waivers, says Kelly Grahovac.   “It’s almost like they...

Cybersecurity and compliance: Big problems for smaller companies

October 22, 2019Liz Beaulieu, Editor

ATLANTA - With most security breaches affecting small- and medium-sized businesses—not the Targets of the world—HME providers can't afford not to prioritize cybersecurity, said speaker Carol Albaugh. Providers are doing business in an environment where health care recently surpassed finance as the industry most targeted by hackers, said Albaugh, a technical solutions consultant at VGM. “It's so rich in the kind of data that hackers are looking to sell on the black...

TPE program: Still a work in progress

January 11, 2019Liz Beaulieu, Editor

WASHINGTON - CMS has updated its “Targeted Probe and Educate” program in two ways that could potentially make it easier and more fair for HME providers. The agency on Dec. 31 implemented the “TPE 10-Claim Preview Pilot” to allow the MACs to select just 10 claims for review under Round 1. If a provider is found to be compliant, the NPI associated with those claims will be exempt from reviews for about one year for those services/items. “In some ways it's good,”...
