PHOENIX – The organizers of Medtrade West are taking a bold step toward returning the HME industry to normalcy by holding an in-person trade show in Phoenix July 12-14. The live event coincides with a rebranding and relocation of Medtrade’s adjunct spring show and boasts a new associate show director in York Schwab.
“We are definitely seeing overall pandemic numbers trending in the right direction and tens of millions have already been vaccinated,” Schwab said about why the timing seems right for an in-person show. “With an eye on overall vaccination numbers and CDC guidelines, coupled with the fact that states are beginning to reopen, we decided to get back to business and schedule Medtrade West for the Phoenix Convention Center.”
Because it is one of the first major trade shows to return to in-person events, there was definitely a bit of surprise from stakeholders, Schwab said.
“The overall vibe we’ve gotten is one of enthusiasm and a definite desire to get back to business,” he said. “Attendance is trending ahead of 2020 and on par with 2019, and we’re optimistic that will improve.”
Safety plan flexible
As COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions continue to evolve, so will the Medtrade West health and safety plan. At press time in mid-May, a mask mandate and temperature screenings were still in place. Social distancing measures will be implemented for queue lines in the badge pick-up area, while larger classrooms allow adequate attendee spacing. Rooms will be cleaned between sessions.
Averting conflict
Unlike previous years, the Expo Hall and Conference portions of Medtrade West are completely separate with no time conflicts. “Many people have found those conflicts annoying, so we’ve done something about it,” Schwab said. “So July 12 and 13 will feature educational sessions and workshops, and July 14 will be devoted to the Expo Floor.
