Welcome to our world, hospitals
August 21, 2014Liz Beaulieu, Editor
The Open Door Forum yesterday was pretty much all hospice, all the time (Oasis, payment rates, cost report, cap survey), so you won't be seeing a story about it in HME News.
But there was an interesting question asked during the Q&A portion of the forum that's worth mentioning here.
Someone from a hospital called in to ask CMS officials why physicians are getting such detailed requests for documentation from DME providers.
He said: “We're getting requests from DME providers for some level of...

BALTIMORE - CMS in February began taking public comment on how to expand competitive bidding nationwide, but not on the program itself, officials said during a March 5 Open Door Forum.During the Q&A portion of the forum, Kim Brummett, senior director of regulatory affairs for AAHomecare, asked if CMS planned to wait until the Office of Inspector General (OIG) releases a pair of reports on Round 1 and Round 2 of competitive bidding before issuing a proposed rule on expanding the program.Joel Kaiser,...

BALTIMORE - CMS has implemented a 120-day grace period for obtaining documentation for CPAP devices and supplies in areas included in Round 2 of competitive bidding, officials announced during an Open Door Forum July 9.The move is in response to contract suppliers notifying CMS of their difficulty obtaining the required medical necessity documentation, which includes the doctor's order for a sleep study and a copy of the study.“Today, I would like to announce a transitional policy to facilitate...
Provide K0005? You'll need an ATP
August 23, 2012Liz Beaulieu, Editor
BALTIMORE - CMS officials don't believe their decision to lump in K0005 ultra lightweight manual wheelchairs with complex rehab wheelchairs will have much of an impact on providers.
During an Open Door Forum Aug. 22, CMS officials clarified that K0005 wheelchairs are considered complex rehab wheelchairs and, therefore, providers must meet all quality standards and accreditation requirements for that product category. One of those requirements: having at least one assistive technology professional...
No news is…good news?

Does anyone listen to the Home Health, Hospice & Durable Medical Equipment Open Door Forums anymore?
We've been listening to them religiously over here at HME News, ever since I can remember. Usually, we rotate the duty among the three editors.
We listen because we don't want to miss out on anything, but it turns out, for the last handful of forums, we haven't gained anything, either.
The last time we wrote about a forum was in January of this year. We included a brief in our HME Newswire saying...
What were you doing at 2 p.m.?
August 25, 2010Liz Beaulieu, Editor
This afternoon, I was one of 223 listeners to the Open Door Forum.
About a dozen listeners asked questions during the Q&A portion of the forum and only two of those listeners were HME providers: Victor Lopez with Hartman Brothers and Kimberlie Rogers-Bowers with Apria. (If you want to find out their questions and CMS's answers, go here.)
The forum, from start to finish, lasted little more than half an hour.
This makes me mad. Well, maybe mad is too strong a word. This makes...

"We're sorry. We have reached full capacity. Please check the Open Door Web site for further information..."
We knew the forum had limited capacity, so we called in 10 minutes early. Apparently, that wasn't early enough.
