CMS expands online submissions for PMD demo

WASHINGTON - Jurisdictions A, C, and D are now accepting PMD prior authorization requests online through the electronic submissions of Medical Documentation (esMD) system, according to a CMS announcement. The move is designed to reduce provider costs and cycle time by minimizing and eventually eliminating the paper processing and mailing of medical documentation to review contractors, the announcement said. WASHINGTON - A Senate Aging Committee hearing next week will focus on new Medicare prior authorization requirements for power mobility devices (PMDs). The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m., will review a three-year CMS demonstration project requiring prior authorizations for PMDs in seven states. WASHINGTON - The seven-state power mobility device demonstration project will begin nine months after its original start date.
The three-year demo will begin Sept. 1, according to a notice CMS filed in the Federal Register Aug. 1. The notice states that the primary reason for the demo is to reduce Medicare fraud.
