ELYRIA, Ohio - Invacare will close Roadrunner Mobility by the end of this year, according to Lara Mahoney, director of investor relations and corporate communications. Invacare bought Roadrunner Mobility, a nationwide network of technicians repairing most brands of consumer power wheelchairs, in 2008. “This is related to reducing complexity and focusing on our core equipment product line,” she said. “Roadrunner Mobility was a great additional service to offer to customers, but we're at a point where we need to focus on our areas of strength and that's equipment for the home and long-term care industry. Roadrunner Mobility is outside of that.” Roadrunner Mobility is part of the Invacare's “5 Star Premium Service Plan.” Invacare announced the decision to staff and customers on Friday (July 26), Mahoney said. “We're starting to make plans to exit and we expect to be fully closed by the end of 2013,” she said. Invacare announced in June that it would close Invacare HCS, a business unit providing billing services to HME providers, by Aug. 30. In its most recent earnings call, the company said it continues to look to divest companies that aren't part of its core equipment business as a way to reduce costs.
