WESTMINSTER, Colo. -Capabilities President Kathryn Arbour in June became the "Denver Mobility Products Examiner" for examiner.com, a Web site that offers news on everything from business to entertainment. Arbour, one of thousands of "examiners," posts news to the Web site several times a week, attracting hundreds of hits. Recent topics: "The hemi adjustable wheelchair" and "Low vision tools for independence." Arbour spoke with HME News in June about how her latest writing gig satisfies her professionally and personally.
HME News: You're not new to writing.
Kathryn Arbour: I've been keeping up a blog on capabilities.com for a couple of years now. I also write for Prime Time for Seniors, a local newspaper for seniors, and I contribute to Disaboom, a community Web site for people with disabilities. I've also had short stories and poetry published, and I worked in corporate communications in a previous career.
HME: Why combine your skills as an HME provider and writer?
Kathryn Arbour: When I embraced the idea of starting Capabilities with Pam Pressel, I wanted it to be more than just a business venture. What inspires me is being able to learn everything there is to learn about something and sharing that information with others.
HME: It must be good exposure for Capabilities, too.
Arbour: Obviously, the more we get identified as experts for solutions, not just products, the more customers will have confidence in us. (The writing) has drawn customers to us. It adds to our credibility. I've had customers say, "I saw your article in Prime Time for Seniors" or "Your name came up when I was doing research online."
