RICHMOND, Va. – Gayle Devin, who recently became CEO at Home Care Delivered, believes in the power of outcomes data to “raise the bar” for the HME industry in an increasingly value-based care world.
With more than 30 years in the industry, she has a long view into the ever-changing nature of health care, including the commoditization of vital medical supplies.
“One of the problems has always been, whether it’s catheters or wound care supplies, is that it’s just seen as a commodity and payers just trying to pay the lowest amount,” she said. “They are not seeing the associated cost that you as a provider (incur). With catheters, specifically, if they don’t work or they cause infections, they cause all kinds of increased down-the-road costs. Some of that will be solved by looking at outcomes data.”
HCD in November announced that Devin would take over for founder and CEO Gordy Fox, who transitioned to chairman of the board of directors. Most recently, Devin was CEO of Alsana, a recovery community for those struggling from eating disorders. She has also served as CEO of ActivStyle, a national medical supply company specializing in incontinence products that sold to AdaptHealth in 2020.
For now, Devin is focused on learning the “HCD way” of caring for patients, looking at potential for improving efficiencies, and transitioning Medline’s patients following HCD’s recent acquisition of the company's DMEPOS supplier business unit.
“I’m very big on KPIs and looking at the data which can show potential areas for improvement without compromising patient care,” she said. “(For Medline’s patients) we’re busing making sure they are going to have a smooth transition that’s seamless and (maintains) continuity of care.”
Devin’s new role at HCD brings her full circle to doing what she loves: taking care of patients.
“The culture that Gordy and the team here at HCD built really aligned with what’s important to me,” said Devin. “HCD is very purpose-driven in its mission of making a positive difference in our customers’ lives and allowing them to live with dignity while managing their disease states.”
