We've cut our staff, and I'm working my butt off

No one will ever accuse Vince DeStigter of not speaking his mind. The 67-year-old owns and operates Western Healthcare and has been a provider for almost 40 years. These days he's plenty fed up with the state of the industry, and he called me recently to let off some steam. Here's what he had to say:
If they keep on cutting our benefits, you know what, let them cut it, but let us all get together and say, 'Let us charge the difference to the Medicare customers and we'll do it. You know what? We're doing this now with the advance beneficiary notice (ABN). Why don't you just set the damn price and quit worrying about it and let us go from that point on. If you want to pay us $95 for something, go ahead. We'll charge the patient $300, and if my competitor wants to change $295, he can do that.'

Why is it so hard for us to figure this out? Let us charge the difference. Come on guys. It is a no-brainer. It's not that big a deal. Do it!
The Message download The ABN works. We're struggling here in California because of the economy, but my gosh, people are walking in the door and paying out of their pocket. They don't have a problem.
Cured Duck move Sure we've cut our staff down to nothing, and I'm working my butt off. I started the first homecare company in 1970 in Oakland. It's been fun, and I still love and believe that home care is the answer. There is no doubt about it.
But how do you get this across to Congress? They don't listen. They don't give a damn.
