PMD template: CMS takes next step

WASHINGTON - Suggested prompts are now in place for the electronic clinical template for power mobility devices (PMDs), paving the way for the next step.
CMS will now begin working with the Office of the National Coordinator for Healthcare IT to integrate the prompts into the physician's electronic health record (EHR). That process will start with an email to stakeholders inviting them to weekly or biweekly calls to hash out the details, says Melanie Combs-Dyer.
“We want to get everyone to agree on what we want to include in the electronic clinical template, how we are going to roll it out, and how we're going to pilot test it with the electronic health record vendors,” said Combs-Dyer, deputy director of the Provider Compliance Group during an Open Door Forum Dec. 19.
CMS has been working on the template, which will walk physicians through the documentation process for face-to-face visits for PMDs, since March.
Key points from the question and answer portion of the forum include:
• The template is still open to revision. Suggestions may be sent to eclinicaltemplate@cms.hhs.gov.
• The template will include reminder prompts to call in a physical therapist or occupational therapist to help evaluate the patient.
• All physicians who have ordered a power mobility device in the previous three years will receive a notification letter about the template.
One key point is still up in the air: whether the template will be CMS-specific or universal. CMS will address that issue at the next forum.
