Worcester, Mass - Postmenopausal women die of diabetes-related disease at the same rate, regardless of race or ethnicity, according to a new UMass Medical School study. That's despite a higher rate of diabetes among black and Hispanic women, Science Daily reports. “Because of the 'amplifying' effect of diabetes prevalence, efforts to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in diabetes mortality should focus on prevention of type 2 diabetes,” said Yunsheng Ma, lead study author and associate professor of medicine, in an article posted on sciencedaily.com. Using data from the Women's Health Initiative, researchers found that all women with diabetes, regardless of race or ethnicity, had a greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease or cancer than those without diabetes.
