'It's as much design as anything'

BILLINGS, Mont. - While some HME companies look to home modifications as a good “offshoot” business, Robin Campbell launched Accessible Home Solutions from the ground up about a year ago.
“We just thought there was an opportunity in our area, with it being a newer industry and with the builders not focused on it,” said Robin Campbell, who has worked as a consultant in the HME industry in the past.
Because many HME companies already have storefronts and referral bases, Campbell has had to hit the pavement educating and selling people, first, on aging in place and, second, on her company, which is Certified Access Professional Specialist and Certified Environmental Access Consultant certified, she says.
“Most people can afford to age in place, but they're not mentally prepared to acknowledge they need grab bars,” she said. “They think, 'I'm not ready for that now.'”
So Campbell, who also has a construction company for more in-depth home modifications and remodels, spends as much of her time educating and selling people on the aesthetics of home modifications.
“It's as much design as anything,” she said.
