WASHINGTON - Reps. John Larson, D-Conn., and Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., are circulating a sign-on letter asking CMS to permanently exempt accessories for complex rehab manual wheelchairs from competitive bidding pricing.
“Complex wheelchair accessories are highly tailored, individualized products that perform critical functions for the Medicare beneficiaries,” the letter states. “Unlike what the name implies, 'accessories' are not nice-to have items, but instead, provide important benefits like preventing skin pressure sores, positioning/supporting the person upright so they can breathe, and allowing the operation of the wheelchair to be tailored to their physical limitations.”
Late in 2019, Congress passed a bill that included language suspending competitive bidding pricing for accessories for complex rehab manual wheelchairs for 18 months starting Jan. 1, 2020.
The deadline for signatures is Aug. 31.
