Brightree plans to spend $50 million over the next four years beefing up its HME product offerings. What's on the front burner for all that dough? A new software platform for home infusion providers, say company officials.
"We have an increasing number of our providers in the infusion market, and we felt like the time was right to make an official significant investment to support infusion," said Mark Blount, vice president of marketing.

T.J. Thompson, president of Atlantic Respiratory Services in Charleston, S.C., worries the independents will be weeded out by national competitive bidding.
"The only way to compete is to convince referrals that I'm going to give their patients the best service," she said. "The physicians in our area don't want to send their patients to the nationals. Once competitive bidding goes through, patient care goes out the window. There's no incentive to compete at that level."

HME Excellence Awards: Health Complex makes excellence simple

"In Minnesota, you could buy a $500 outfit and you wouldn't get taxed, but you could buy a $500 piece of medical equipment and you would," said Rose Schafhauser, executive director of the Midwest Association for Medical Equipment Services (MAMES). "When we've explained that, it has resonated with lawmakers."

Rotech Healthcare's first quarter 2010 revenues rose about 9% compared to first quarter 2009, the company reported May 10. "First quarter results demonstrated solid growth in net revenues and patient counts," said Philip Carter, President and CEO in a statement.
