Briefs: Bernens makes it twice as nice

DELHI TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Bernens Medical planned to open a second location in the Community Wellness Center in Delhi Township, Ohio, in September. It will offer the same services as Bernens' first location in West Price Hill, which is well known for the stuffed Pink Panthers in its window displays. Bernens provides durable medical equipment and medical supplies and offers free same-day prescription deliveries. It plans to expand its offerings to include immunizations, health screenings and educational sessions on health topics.

Colonial expands

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Colonial Medical Supplies has opened a new location here that houses its corporate office, customer service center, warehouse and billing department, the provider announced Aug. 24. The showroom will allow Colonial to improve delivery times and better coordinate service to customers, doctors, hospitals and home health agencies in Seminole County. The location is Colonial's fourth. The provider has been serving customers in central Florida since 1957.

Hospital, providers go head-to-head

RINGEWOOD, N.J. - Providers here that sell home medical equipment have a new competitor: Valley Hospital. The hospital in August launched the Valley Health Marketplace, an online store offering a wide range of products, including HME. "Healthcare retail is a new idea for hospitals," stated Rita Donato-Edwards, Valley's director of retail strategies, in a release. The release goes on to state: "Many of the items in the online store are products that may be hard to find. With its comprehensive range of products, multiple stops for medical supplies on the way home from the hospital or during recovery are a thing of the past."

Rep. Fox: 'I'm a big proponent of people staying home'

STATESVILLE, N.C. - During a stop at Medi Home Care in August, Rep. Virginia Fox, R-N.C., said "I'm a big proponent of people staying in their homes as long as they can," according to the Statesville Record & Landmark. Fox addressed about 50 people, mostly employees of the company. She described home care as patient preferred and cost effective. When an employee shared his concerns about national competitive bidding, Fox said, "The problem is that what we end up making hurdles for everyone to get over instead of going after the criminals and punishing them harshly."
